About us

The College of General Practitioners of Sri Lanka, which is the professional academic body of family physicians, had it's beginnings in 1969. The founder members were the members of council of the Independent Medical Practitioners Association at that time. Dr. G M Heennilame was given the task of incorporating the College by statute. This he did along with the pioneers, Drs A M Fernando , MPM Cooray and Soma Weeratunge and ensured that the College of General Practitioners, Sri Lanka was incorporated in 1974 with Incorporation Law No.26 being passed in Parliament..(R)

The primary aim of the newly established College was to gain recognition for Family Medicine as an academic discipline, and during the last three decades the College has made tremendous progress. By the provision of postgraduate training and qualification in Family Medicine, inclusion of Family Medicine in the curriculum for medical undergraduates, increasing access to continuing education in family practice and enhancing the research orientation of general / family physicians, the College has achieved its primary aim.

The educational activities of the College have collectively contributed to better standards of general / family practice in Sri Lanka which is now recognized as a key component of primary level health care in Sri Lanka read more >>
